The workshop on teaming was a success with rich and powerful discussions Vivian and Kitty planned a very well-organized workshop for us. We started by articulating the importance of setting norms and using protocols when working in teams, and why some people are resistant to this process and the accountability it requires.. We then watched a 10 min video of a actual team meeting and analyzed the dynamics. We identified connections between the success of the team and the strength of the team leader - teacher leadership is everywhere!! We reflected about productive "team talk" and used role play to look at the process of setting goals for collaboration through the lens of our professional communication.
At the start of the workshop, we went around the group to share reasons for attending and our interest in teaming. Many of our teachers said that they are part of a team, but in name only. They don't sense a full embrace of collaborative practrice. As the workshop progressed, the theme of teacher leadership repeatedly emerged and we discussed the importance of guidance, coaching, and feedback skills for both administrators and teachers on a team to keep group focus and improving practice. To me, that was the most interesting and powerful part of the workshop, and that is something I'm interested in pursuing further in future conferences.
